Cadillac SUV collides with Muni bus on Mission and flips — SUV

first_img Email Address A messy scene greeted San Franciscans on Mission Street this morning, following a dramatic collision between a Cadillac SUV and a 14R Muni bus at around 8:20 a.m.Per the driver of the bus, who claimed he had about 50 passengers aboard, the Cadillac collided with the right side of his bus near the traffic light at Mission and Trumbull while both were heading north, toward downtown. After making contact with the bus, the Cadillac purportedly struck a parked Public Works pickup truck and then flipped over. The collision left the SUV riddled with damage and resting on its left side in the midst of traffic. The bus was immobilized a few dozen yards up College Hill on Mission; damage was visible on its right side along the articulated “accordion” section. The rear axle of the DPW truck was noticeably bent. Both it and the SUV were towed, while the bus was driven off under its own power. The bus driver claimed the driver of the Cadillac fled the accident, which was not denied by police on the scene. A Cadillac SUV allegedly sideswiped a 14R Muni bus before flipping over. The incident left visible damage on Muni Bus No. 6727. Photo by Joe Eskenazi. If so, this was an involved move: The SUV was perched upon its driver’s-side door, so exiting the vehicle must have been difficult. The rear window, either via the impact of the collision or a subsequent kick, was shattered. The incident made for an eventful morning for area workers and residents; teachers and administrators at the adjacent Mission YMCA preschool took in the scene alongside seniors delivered to the Y via paratransit, while SFMTA personnel directed traffic. There were no significant injuries, according to police. This is an active case and a breaking story. We will add more as we discover it.Police congregate near the Cadillac SUV that allegedly hit a Muni bus before capsizing. NC Senate Libertarian candidate bows out endorses incumbent

first_imgWILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — We are less than a week from election day and a heated race for State Senate just got a lot more interesting. The Libertarian candidate taking his hat out of the race to endorse incumbent State Senator Michael Lee.Ethan Bickley announced Wednesday he was supporting the Republican incumbent.- Advertisement – “After meeting with Senator Lee, I am convinced that he should be re-elected and continue the dedicated service he has demonstrated as our State Senator,” said Bickley in an official statement. It comes as thousands of votes have already been cast in New Hanover County. At the start of early voting, New Hanover County voters had three choices to represent them in the State Senate district 9 seat. Republican Incumbent Michael Lee, former Wilmington Mayor Democrat Harper Peterson, and newcomer Libertarian Ethan Bickley a veteran.Related Article: How the FBI used science to identify mail bomb suspect“The endorsement stemmed from basically this is the first time that I’ve ever done anything political and it’s a tough gig,” said Bickley. “So on a human level, Michael Lee reached out to me and asked me for help.”Bickley says he agrees with Lee’s record in the Senate on water safety. That led to his support.“I was as surprised as you,” said Lee’s challenger Peterson. “But I think we’re fine. Six days out and we’re excited about our campaign.”Peterson says he’s not worried about the endorsement swaying voters.“I don’t know what to tell you. I’m sure it would be confusing to Libertarians.”Libertarian State House candidate David Perry taking to social media backtracking his endorsement and saying, “I have no doubt that financial threats and/or incentives factored into this deplorable decision.”“We may not agree on everything politically but we definitely agree on many things,” Bickley said referring to Lee.Bickley says he is unable to commit to the campaign due to new employment opportunities adding that he thought long and hard about whether or not to endorse anyone else in this election.Lee provided this statement to our Andrew James saying in part, “I appreciate Mr. Bickley taking the time to get to know me, the real me and not what the false ads portray.”“I apologize to the Libertarian Party for having to discontinue my campaign,” wrote Bickley in his endorsement statement. “I really wanted to make an impact on my community.  I now feel that by endorsing Senator Lee, my candidacy can still have an impact by asking my supporters to make their votes count.”last_img read more

Sudan scraps telecoms profit tax

first_imgAdvertisement The government of Sudan has suspended a 30% tax on telecoms profits until the end of 2015, introducing a 2.5% tax on total income in its place, says a statement from the Sudan News Agency (SUNA).In December 2011 Khartoum increased a profit tax on the country’s telecoms operators from 15% to 30%, while a sales and services levy rose from 20% to 30%, in a bid to make up for the loss of oil revenue from the South, which gained independence in July 2011.[related-posts] – Advertisement – It is unclear whether the new 2.5% tax on total income is in addition to, or replaces, the sales tax. A spokesperson for Zain, Sudan’s largest mobile operator by subscribers, said the profit tax exemption would be backdated to 1 January 2013.Two other companies operate in Sudan’s mobile market alongside Kuwaiti-owned Zain, namely South Africa’s MTN Sudan and Sudani, the mobile arm of fixed line incumbent Sudan Telecom Company (Sudatel).Canar Telecommunication Company (Canartel), which is 89%-owned by Etisalat of the United Arab Emirates, also provides fixed telephony services in the country. Recently, the market’s telecoms operators have been hit by the plunging value of the Sudanese pound and a shortage of foreign currency.Source: www.telegeography.comlast_img read more

Flipboard Brings Your Magazines to the Browser

first_imgAdvertisement After three years as a tablet-only app — and later, for smartphones, too — Flipboard is now making its way to the browser. Beginning Tuesday, user-created magazines will begin appearing on, with the rest of the Flipboard experience to roll out later this year or early next year, Flipboard CEO Mike McCue told Mashable in a phone interview Monday. So for the first time, some Flipboard content will be available for viewing on desktops. You will also be able to browse user-created Flipboard magazines on your smartphone or tablet browser.Flipboard is an app that aggregates content from a wide variety of sources, including news websites, social networks and blogs, which you can organize into “flippable,” magazine-style pages. It launched on the iPad not long after Apple released the device in mid-2010, expanding later to the iPhone as well as Android smartphones and tablets. In March, allowed users to not only subscribe to magazine-style feeds, but also create their own. – Advertisement – When developing a browser version, McCue said Flipboard experimented with a number of different layouts, including vertical and horizontal scrolling and a “Snow Fall”-like format on which elements appeared mid-scroll. Ultimately, the team settled on a paginated design essentially identical to the one that appears on Flipboard’s tablet apps. Functionality is currently limited. You can read articles, click through to their original sources and subscribe to magazines, but the ability to Like and comment will be included in a future update, McCue said.I asked McCue whether a full-screen, paginated layout makes sense for desktop readers, who don’t — or can’t — enjoy the same immersive “lean back” experience as tablet readers. He insisted the browser layout allows readers to quickly scan the content of the page and move on.“I think it’s the best way to navigate through large amounts of content quickly,” he said. He also pointed out that windows can be easily resized to take up only part of a screen. The decision to launch only user-created magazines on browsers, rather than than the entire Flipboard experience, is an interesting one. McCue indicated that it is easier for Flipboard to “roll out in pieces,” but I suspect the decision was partly promotional — a way to generate interest in and boost subscriber counts for user-created magazines. In addition to the browser launch, Flipboard also revealed a new category dubbed “Big Ideas” on Tuesday, which features Flipboard’s first dive into original content, including an interview with former Larry King Live host Larry King. When asked about Flipboard’s advertising business, McCue said that momentum has been “just awesome,” and that the company has recently added a number of new advertisers, including Gucci and Bottega Veneta.User numbers are also continuing to rise, recently surpassing the 75 million mark, up from 50 million at the end of March.Credit: Mashablelast_img read more

Spain plane crash linked to datawipe error

first_imgAdvertisement A military plane crash in Spain was probably caused by computer files being accidentally wiped from three of its engines, according to investigators.Plane-maker Airbus discovered anomalies in the A400M’s data logs after the crash, suggesting a software fault. And it has now emerged that Spanish investigators suspect files needed to interpret its engine readings had been deleted by mistake. This would have caused the affected propellers to spin too slowly. – Advertisement – The aeroplane crashed near Seville, during a test flight on 9 May, killing four crew members on board.Several countries that had already accepted deliveries of the plane – including the UK – grounded them following the accident. However, Airbus has announced it plans to fly one of its own A400M aircraft at the Paris Air Show next week.“We have complete confidence in the A400M, and we are delighted to fly our demo as planned,” said Airbus executive Fernando Alonso in a statement.Sources say the focus of the inquiry was a theory that files known as “torque calibration parameters” had been accidentally deleted during a software installation process ahead of the plane’s first flight. Each engine is run by a separate computer called an Electronic Control Unit. The ECUs take the pilot’s inputs and make the engines they control respond in the optimum way.The parameter files are used by the ECUs to interpret sensor readings about the turning force generated by each engine – the torque – which is used to make the attached propellers spin. Without the files, the ECUs cannot make sense of this data. This would explain why three of the plane’s four engines did not respond properly to the crew’s attempts to adjust their power settings shortly after take-off.Via BBClast_img read more

Brown School of Engineering. The Rice students are among a growing number of U.S. engineering students using their skills to improve the quality of life in developing countries, one village at a time, through the nonprofit Engineers Without Borders-USA (EWB-USA), which holds its national conference this week at Rice. More than 300 participants are expected at the 2006 Engineers Without Borders-USA Conference, which runs Feb. 16-18 at the Shell Auditorium in McNair Hall. EWB-USA partners with local communities in developing countries worldwide to provide environmentally and economically sustainable solutions for basic water, sanitation, shelter, bridge and energy systems. Rice’s EWB-USA chapter has 65 members working on four projects in El Salvador, Mexico and Nicaragua. Four team leaders — Alex Gordon, his brother Ross Gordon, David Kelvin and Stewart Walther — will report on the success of the El Salvador project at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16. Rice University President David W. Leebron will open the conference at 9 a.m. Thursday. Sallie Keller-McNulty, dean of Rice’s George R. Brown School of Engineering, will deliver a keynote speech titled “Teaching and Learning by Thinking Out of the Box” at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Rice’s EWB-USA chapter is unique in that it involves students in every aspect of planning and implementation of projects. In the El Salvadoran village of San Jose Villanueva, a small community about 30 minutes south of the capital, San Salvador, the Rice students and their technical advisory team helped provide the village with a water storage tank, a private bathing area, seven laundry stations and water taps at the site of a natural spring. Water is now purified using affordable and effective in-home purification units. These improvements were provided over the course of a two-year project that included site assessment, solution development, community organization and empowerment, implementation and fundraising. Houston-based supporters of the Rice EWB-USA chapter include Groundwater Service Inc.; TCB AECOM, an engineering, planning, and management firm; the charitable Herzstein Foundation; and Lee Slade of Walter P. Moore Engineering & Consultants. Alex Gordon summed up his reasons for joining the Rice EWB-USA chapter: “I didn’t want to spend all my time in class,” he said. “I wanted to go out and do something, see something. Most times, engineering students don’t have a chance to go abroad because the curriculum is too demanding. EWB gave me a special opportunity to go abroad and to help people and to learn from them, too.” For photos and more information on the 2006 Engineers Without Borders-USA Conference, visit: For photos and more information on the Rice EWB-USA Chapter, visit: . last_img read more

Zettek, Ph.D., Director of the Full-Time MBA Career Management Center at the University of Georgia Terry College of Business, and Deirdre Kane, Director of Full-Time MBA Admissions about the UGA experience, Southern culture, and more. What is something unique about the Terry College of Business MBA experience that people may not expect?“Candidates to our program are most often surprised by three main things:1.) Our flexible curriculum2.) Our personalized and customized approach to supporting our students, academically and professionally3.) Our welcoming and diverse program culture. We have years of experience and the strength and size of our alumni network (310,000 and counting) to support our students in being successful while in the program and after they graduate. Our career management staff knows our students well and this one-on-one attention makes a big difference by the end of the program. Students learn and practice skills they need to land their next job or internship, and also to manage their careers throughout their lives. Faculty get to know the students, and truly take an interest in their success.” What kind of student is the ideal Terry College of Business MBA?“We look for humility, self-awareness and the willingness to learn new things about themselves—people who have experienced a setback or two—and learned from it. The ideal candidate for the Georgia MBA program has more than just the great test scores and GPAs sought by all full-time MBA programs, we look for the students that demonstrate a roll up the sleeves and get things done attitude. These are the people who do well here.”What do you find business school applicants often overlook during the pre-MBA process?“I think some people limit their choices by looking only at certain things, rather than the whole picture. They may focus tightly on one factor—school rank, tuition cost, employer relationships, average salary—rather than fully thinking through what they want and need from their MBA experience. Visiting campuses, talking to current students and meeting members of the staff could offer a very different view than the one that takes into account only one or two factors. MBA programs vary widely and there is not a one-size-fits-all experience. Find a few that fit your needs and go after them.”“We look for humility, self-awareness and the willingness to learn new things about themselves—people who have experienced a setback or two—and learned from it” – Patricia D. Zettek, Ph.D. and Deirdre KaneWhat do you find most business schools are lacking?“Lacking is a pretty strong word. I consider business school an excellent investment in a candidate’s future. I understand why you might ask though, because if you listen to the media, the MBA has been dying out since the 1940s, but that’s just not true! There continues to be a need for professionals trained to understand the complexities of our business environment and committed to doing things right. Overall MBA programs and program staff are committed to the success of their students and genuinely interested in providing their students with the best experience and the best opportunities.”What is your favorite restaurant near UGA?“I think Athens is one of the South’s most underrated food cities. We’re known for music and football, but not until recently have we been noticed for our food scene. Thanks to chefs like Hugh Acheson, who calls Athens home, we have many farm to table gems, like Last Resort Grill, The National, home.made, and Heirloom Café. And everyone should check out Weaver D’s, Ted’s Most Best, Clocked, The Grit, Taziki’s, and Viva Argentine! The list is long and there is something for everyone!”Southern-inspired specialties are abound in Athens, Georgia, including at home.made, founded by New Orleans-born chef Mimi Maumus – Photo via homemadeathens.comFor more information on the UGA Terry MBA admissions, click here. Immigration Takes Center Stage at State of the Union

first_img Immigration Takes Center Stage at State of the Union Trump says his plan is a fair compromise for both partiesBy Charlotte Cuthbertson January 31, 2018 Updated: February 3, 2018 Share (L–R) Robert Mickens, Elizabeth Alvarado, Evelyn Rodriguez, and Freddy Cuevas—parents of slain teenage girls—are recognized during the State of the Union address at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 30, 2018. (NICHOLAS KAMM/AFP/Getty Images) Share this article WASHINGTON—The president spent almost one-quarter of his 81-minute State of the Union speech on immigration, underscoring its pivotal role within his administration. He began by saying it is the immigrant communities that suffer the most from illegal immigration and lax border security. “For decades, open borders have allowed drugs and gangs to pour into our most vulnerable communities. They have allowed millions of low-wage workers to compete for jobs and wages against the poorest Americans,” President Donald Trump said. “Most tragically, they have caused the loss of many innocent lives.”Trump introduced Evelyn Rodriguez, Freddy Cuevas, Elizabeth Alvarado, and Robert Mickens, the parents of two teenage girls who were murdered on Long Island, New York, by a group of MS-13 gang members. The president’s framework is generous and humane, while also being responsible. — Tom Cotton, U.S. senator (R-Ark.) These two precious girls were brutally murdered while walking together in their hometown,” Trump said. Six members of MS-13 have been charged with their murders. (Samira Bouaou/The Epoch Times)Trump has called the unaccompanied minor and family unit program, “one of the largest loopholes in U.S. border security.”“Every year, tens of thousands of illegal aliens—some traveling with their parents—are caught after illegally crossing the border, only to be quickly released into our country,” the White House said in October when it released its immigration priorities.Trump said at the time that he wants to amend current laws that require authorities to release these illegal aliens en masse into the United States. The number of unaccompanied minors removed in fiscal year 2016 represented approximately 4 percent of all unaccompanied minors released into the country that same year, according to the administration. Border Patrol Agents talk to unaccompanied minors who just crossed over the U.S.–Mexico border, before loading them in a van for transport to an Office of Refugee and Resettlement facility, in Hidalgo County, Texas, on May 26, 2017. (Benjamin Chasteen/The Epoch Times)DACA AmnestyTrump appealed to Congress to get behind his proposal to give amnesty to 1.8 million illegal immigrants who were brought into the country as children, including 700,000 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) beneficiaries. “In recent months, my administration has met extensively with both Democrats and Republicans to craft a bipartisan approach to immigration reform,” Trump said. “Based on these discussions, we presented the Congress with a detailed proposal that should be supported by both parties as a fair compromise—one where nobody gets everything they want, but where our country gets the critical reforms it needs.”The president wants tighter border security, including funding for a wall along the southwest border, and an end to chain migration and the diversity visa lottery, in exchange for the amnesty.“In recent weeks, two terrorist attacks in New York were made possible by the visa lottery and chain migration. In the age of terrorism, these programs present risks we can no longer afford,” Trump said. “My duty, and the sacred duty of every elected official in this chamber, is to defend Americans—to protect their safety, their families, their communities, and their right to the American Dream. Because Americans are dreamers too.”Trump rescinded the DACA program on Sept. 5, 2017, saying that former President Barack Obama was acting illegally and unconstitutionally when he launched the program through executive order in 2012. Although Trump gave Congress until March 5 to come up with a permanent solution, a subsequent court ruling means DACA currently has no expiry date. If Congress cannot agree on a legislative fix, there will be no consequences for the 700,000 recipients—for now they can continue to renew their two-year work authorization and are protected from deportation. The case is due to be heard in the Supreme Court in the next several weeks. (Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)A week after Senate Minority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) forced a three-day government shutdown because he wanted an amnesty for DACA included in the spending bill, he has rejected Trump’s proposal outright, tweeting on Jan. 26 that it would “tear apart our legal immigration system.”Schumer said Trump’s plan “flies in the face of what most Americans believe.” However, a recent Harvard-Harris poll revealed that 68 percent of Americans said they oppose the diversity lottery and 79 percent said they believe “immigration priority for those coming to the U.S. should be based on a person’s ability to contribute to America as measured by their education and skills—and not based on a person having relatives in the U.S.”In a June 2017 Gallup poll, 73 percent of Americans said they would prefer the same or lower levels of immigration. “I have offered DACA a wonderful deal, including a doubling in the number of recipients & a twelve year pathway to citizenship, for two reasons,” Trump tweeted on Jan. 27. “(1) Because the Republicans want to fix a long time terrible problem. (2) To show that Democrats do not want to solve DACA, only use it!”Unintended ConsequencesImmigration hawks are concerned about a number of potential consequences an amnesty could trigger. Michael Cutler, a former INS agent and immigration expert, said the 1986 amnesty under President Ronald Reagan encouraged more illegal immigration. “The greatest influx of illegal aliens occurred after the supposedly ‘one time’ 1986 amnesty,” Cutler said in an email on Jan. 26. He said if the amnesty for DACA is passed, it will “fire the starting pistol for illegal immigration.” The Reagan amnesty was projected to give about 1 million illegal immigrants citizenship. However, the actual number was closer to 4 million. Cutler said the estimated 1.8 million in the current amnesty proposal could also balloon to millions more as illegal aliens enter the United States and lie about their actual dates of entry.“While the U.S.–Mexico border must be made secure, it will take years for that wall to be built and meanwhile each and every day those illegal aliens … know that if they can only enter the United States they can apply for [the amnesty],” Cutler said. He said as the southern border becomes more secure, more attention will need to be put on the alternate ways into the United States, including visa and document fraud, the northern border, and the 95,000 miles of U.S. coastline. A Homeland Security border patrol officer rides an ATV past prototypes of President Donald Trump’s proposed border wall in San Diego, Calif., on Nov. 1, 2017. (FREDERIC J. BROWN/AFP/Getty Images)Trump’s framework says the amnesty includes requirements for work, education, and good moral character. It also includes, “clear eligibility requirements to mitigate fraud” and the legal status is subject to revocation for “criminal conduct or public safety and national security concerns, public charge, fraud, etc.”Data from United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, says that 2,130 DACA recipients have had their status revoked due to criminal and gang activity since the program’s inception in 2012.Trump has omitted any mention of mandatory e-verify in his new four-pronged plan. Proponents say e-verify is a critical step to stopping the continual flow of illegal immigrants. They say if the work dries up for illegal immigrants—due to them being deported and their employers being charged for hiring illegal aliens—fewer people will cross the border.Mark Krikorian, executive director at the Center for Immigration Studies, said in a blog post that the White House decided months ago not to push the measure, “thinking it would be a bridge too far for Democrats, since it impacts illegals who are already here.”Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), who has emerged as a strong ally for Trump in immigration reform, said the president’s plan is “generous and humane, while also being responsible.”“The president’s willingness to grandfather everyone in the current immigrant backlog also shows he’s serious about reaching a bipartisan solution,” Cotton said in a statement on Jan. 25. The backlog consists of about four million, mostly chain migrants. Trump has called his immigration proposal a “down-the-middle compromise” that will create a safe, modern, and lawful immigration system.“For over 30 years, Washington has tried and failed to solve this problem. This Congress can be the one that finally makes it happen,” he said. “Most importantly, these four pillars will produce legislation that fulfills my ironclad pledge to only sign a bill that puts America first. So let us come together, set politics aside, and finally get the job done.” Follow Charlotte on Twitter: @charlottecuthbo last_img read more

Gun Store Manager Fired After Tackling Gun Theft Suspect Reports

first_img Share this article  LINKEDINPINTERESTREDDITTUMBLRSTUMBLEUPON   A Florida gun store manager was fired from his job after tackling a man when he ran out of the store with a stolen gun and ammunition.Dean Crouch, who worked at the Academy Sports store in Tallahassee, was called a “hero” by the National Rifle Association.“My employee yelled, ‘Stop that man!”‘ Dean Crouch, 32, of the June 29 attempted theft incident, WCTV reported. “I turned and looked and saw Mr. White running from the gun bar toward the front of the store with a firearm in his hand. At the front door is where I stopped him. I tackled him to the ground. We apprehended him and detained him. We secured the firearm.”He is referring to Jason F. White, 24, who was arrested by the Tallahassee Police Department on June 29 for three firearm thefts at two businesses.“Employees reported a man requested to look at two handguns, a .45 caliber and a .380 caliber handgun. The man picked up both handguns and ran outside the store without purchasing them, fleeing the area in a silver Toyota,” the police department wrote. At a second store, employees detained the suspect after he tried to run out of the store with guns and ammunition.Crouch, however, said that for his efforts, he was suspended for a week and later fired from his job at Academy Sports, WCTV reported. “We are grateful that everyone is safe after this incident and for the quick actions of the Tallahassee Police,” Academy Sports spokeswoman Elise Hasbrook said in a statement to the station. “We have policies in place to protect our team members and customers during a robbery. While this incident ended without injuries, actions inconsistent with our corporate policies were taken.”The NRA’s Marion Hammer told CBS News that the firing “is insanity. This man is a hero.”“He stopped an initial crime that would have led to other crimes, and he gets fired. How on Earth is that right?” she asked.“Our world is pretty much turned upside down after this,” Crouch said of the firing. “We had to put our house on the market because of this.”White allegedly told police that someone threatened his family, which prompted him to steal a weapon. “I stole and I admit to it,” White told police, according to the WCTV report. “I will steal again when I get out of jail.” Gun Store Manager Fired After Tackling Gun Theft Suspect: Reports By Jack Phillips July 12, 2018 Updated: July 12, 2018 Jason White.
