The walk and run got under way in the relative cool at 7:30 a.m. and followed a course winding through the 160-acre Gardens. The event raised $5,000 for Descanso Gardens.“It was a great event, and for a first-time run, we had a really good response,” said run coordinator Ryan Kugler. The run was produced by A5 Events of Burbank, which coordinates charity walks and runs. “Descanso is a great property with great trails, and this introduces it to a new audience,” he said.“Running is not an activity we allow in the Gardens every day because we are a botanic garden, not a recreational park,” said Juliann Rooke, Descanso chief operating officer. “I think people really enjoyed the chance to bring their passion for running and walking to this beautiful location in the cool of the morning. It was a great way to start the weekend!”Vendors and informational booths added to the festive vibe of the morning. Cedars Sinai Medical Center hosted a blood drive at the event. Martin Riese of Patina Restaurant Group and the nation’s first “water sommelier” provided samples of bottled H2O from around the world for the parched participants. And Assemblyman Mike Gatto (D-Glendale) issued a proclamation to Descanso Gardens in support of the event.Founded as a public garden in 1953, Descanso Gardens is located at 1418 Descanso Drive, La Cañada Flintridge. Descanso Gardens is a member-supported garden accredited by the American Association of Museums. Admission is $9 for adults; $6 for seniors and students with a school I.D.; $4 for children 5 to 12, and free for age 4 and younger. Join Descanso Gardens and enjoy free admission and early entry year-round. Descanso Gardens is open daily (closed Christmas) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended summer hours from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, June 18 to Aug. 20.
